Chicago
Chicago, the way I do it
I live here. I eat a lot. I'm building a guide that's opinionated, practical, and not sponsored. If you want the full list, that lives on Do Chicago Right.
The rules
- No sponsored content. No affiliate links. If it’s here, it’s because I actually like it.
- If a place gets worse, I’ll say so. Loyalty is for people, not menus.
- Tourist spots aren’t automatically bad. But they’re guilty until proven delicious.
If you have 48 hours
Not an itinerary. A starting point that won’t waste your time.
- Eat tavern-style pizzaThe real Chicago pizza. Thin, crispy, cut in squares. Deep dish is for tourists.
- Pick a neighborhood and walkChicago rewards wandering. Don't do the whole city in one weekend.
- Get tacos (late)There are levels to this. You'll learn quickly.
- Argue about pizzaLocals eat tavern-style. Deep dish is special occasion food at best.
Hot takes
Low stakes, high confidence.
- Tavern-style is the real Chicago pizza. Deep dish is what we feed to visitors.
- Chicago has some of the best Mexican food in America. People sleep on it because they don't realize how big the Mexican population is here.
- Chicago summers make you forget winter exists. Winter fixes that.
- If you only go downtown, you didn't really visit Chicago.
